What is Flare Care?
Flare Care is a lifestyle plan designed to target the endocannabinoid system to calm inflammation and pain.
The endocannabinoid system
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a group of endogenous cannabinoid receptors located in the mammalian brain and throughout the central and peripheral nervoussystems, consisting of neuromodulatory lipids and their receptors.
Goal is to target the endocannabinoid system to calm inflammation and reduce pain.
Flare Care is a lifestyle plan for people who suffer from inflammatory-mediated disorders and clinical endocannabinoid deficiency (CECD). Inflammatory disorders include Arthrtitis, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Flare Care is a plan to follow during a flare-up.
Flare Ups tend to happen during stressful periods of life.
During a flare-up, symptoms can include:
loss of bowel control
swelling of joints
body aches and pain
Although diet can be very individualistic, especially for people with gut disorders, there is currently enough evidence to suggest several foods to emphasize and foods to limit- especially during active stages of disease.
The FLARE CARE plan will help patients control inflammation, balance bacteria and repair the gut barrier.
Stage 1) Calm Inflammation “Stop, Drop and Roll to put out the fire…”
During this stage, dietary fasting, rest and medical cannabis are used to help stop overactive inflammation and manage pain. Fresh fruit & vegetable juicing is introduced.
Key Supplements: Turmeric, n-3 fatty acids, Boswellia, Vitamin D
Stage 2) Balance Bacteria
To promote the growth of beneficial bacteria- probiotic bacteria and naturally fermented foods are suggested as well as soluble prebiotic fibers, which should be introduced gradually to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Key Supplements: Vitamin B12, Vitamin K, Probiotics
Stage 3) Repair The Gut Barrier
Honey, banana, chamomile and marshmallow root can help soothe irritation and heal mucosal damage. Adequate intake of several nutrients, including vitamin A, vitamin D and zinc should be advocated to promote the growth of healthy epithelial cells lining the gut. High protein smoothies are introduced.
Key Supplements: Magnesium, Aloe Vera
Stage 4) Maintenance
To control inflammation, a Mediterranean-style diet should be encouraged, especially fatty fish, nuts & seeds, and fresh fruits & vegetables. Patients with IBD should be advised to limit or restrict alcohol intake and NSAIDS since they can weaken and damage the gut barrier.
Overall, improving the diet and nutrient intakes of patients with IBD can help increase energy levels, suppress overactive inflammation, promote the growth of beneficial bacteria, strengthen the gut barrier and improve mucosal healing.
Please note that the FLARE CARE plan is not a replacement for your Crohn’s and Colitis Medications. In most cases, the FLARE CARE plan can be used together with your current treatments. Please talk to your doctor about the FLARE CARE plan.
